Prevention and treatment of nail fungus - effective folk and pharmacy remedies

Anyone who is familiar with a fungal infection knows how much trouble this disease brings. In the summer, it is not possible to wear sandals, and at home you have to shyly hide your feet in socks. In addition to aesthetic problems, onychomycosis also brings physical problems, so it is important to “stop” the disease at the very beginning.

The list of places where you can become infected with a fungus is endless, so we list those where the risk of contracting a fungus is highest:

Healthy feet and nails
  • At home, when using manicure accessories “with the whole family”(one scissors or tweezers for everyone, for example).
  • In the beauty salon(and at home) during a manicure/pedicure, nail extension session, etc.subject to insufficient quality of processing of tools.
  • In the pool- when walking barefoot near the pool or in public showers.
  • In public baths, saunas, gyms.
  • When using shared towels.
  • When using a matfor the bathroom “with the whole family”.
  • When wearing tight or poor-quality shoes.
  • In spa salons, fitness clubs.
  • When “exchanging” shoes(one friend lets another wear it, or guests are given slippers from someone from the family to wear).
  • If you frequently use socks/tights made of synthetic fibers.
  • With frequent contact (and subsequent injury to the nail plates) with household chemicals.
  • When taking oral contraceptivesor antibiotics.

What treatment can a doctor prescribe - the most effective drugs

As soon as you notice signs of incipient mycosis, you should go to a dermatologist or mycologist.

The specialist determines the type of fungus and, according to research, prescribes treatment.Usually, an examination, tests, scraping of tissue for examination, assessment of the thickness/structure of the nail, and determination of the type of fungus are sufficient.

What is the treatment?

  1. At the initial stageSometimes antifungal varnish and cutting off those parts of the nails that are affected by the fungus are enough.
  2. With local treatmentuse conventional antifungal drugs (from ointments and patches to solutions and varnishes), usually twice a day.
  3. The drug is applied to the nails only after treating the feet.First, soften the nails/skin in a warm soda solution and with soap.Afterwards, apply the drug for the prescribed time.Next - hygiene procedures again.
  4. How long to treat? It depends on the stage of the disease. You won’t be able to deal with a fungus like you would with a runny nose. The treatment will take a long time - be patient. As a rule, this process takes from 2 months to 1 year.
  5. If local treatment is ineffectivethe specialist prescribes general antimycotics (by mouth). But only after a special examination and in the absence of contraindications. They are also not combined with other medications/drugs.Contraindications: breastfeeding and, of course, pregnancy, as well as taking hormonal contraceptives, kidney/liver disease.
  6. Related actions.During the treatment process, you will have to treat all shoes (as well as socks, etc.) with a special solution prescribed by the doctor.
  7. At the end of treatment(that is, when healthy nails grow), control tests will be carried out.Their results will show whether the treatment was effective or whether dermatophytes are still present.

Note:Nail fungus is an extremely tenacious “infection”.In addition, it is known for its high resistance to antifungal drugs. That's whythe disease must be cured completely, otherwise the effect will be extremely low during repeated treatment.

And, of course, you should not self-medicate.All medications are used exclusively as prescribed by a specialist!

10 best folk remedies for nail fungus

If there is a suspicion of nail fungus, one of the traditional methods can be used simultaneously with treatment from a specialist. It is not recommended to use it instead of treatment with a doctor- you risk aggravating the problem, and then the recovery process will really be long and exhausting.

Measures to prevent nail fungus - how to protect yourself from the scourge?

You can protect yourself from fungus by simply following the rules of hygiene and timely preventive measures.

Remember:

  • In all public places (beaches, showers, locker rooms, swimming pools, spas, etc.) we wear easy-to-clean slippers.Don't go barefoot where there is a risk of getting an infection!
  • We don’t wear other people’s shoes (including slippers when visiting – it’s better to wear socks).
  • We do not use other people's towels or manicure accessories.
  • When getting out of the bathroom, we place our feet not on the common (and often wet, not the first freshness) rug, but on our own towel (allocate it in advance for such purposes).
  • Nail fungus polish
  • We regularly examine your feet and nails for signs of fungus. At the slightest symptoms (cracks/itching between the fingers, change in nail color, etc.), we take action. That is, we purchase ointments, special/varnishes, etc.
  • We try not to use tight, narrow shoes, or shoes made of low-quality materials.
  • We regularly treat the inside of our shoes with antiseptics.
  • To prevent our feet from sweating, we use deodorants, talc, etc.
  • We use only cotton socks. If you need to use tights/stockings (products made of nylon and other synthetic fabrics) at home, be sure to remove them, steam your legs, and treat them.
  • In hot weather, we wear open shoes for ventilation and free air exchange.Sweaty feet are a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • We don’t try on shoes in stores without socks—on bare feet.
  • We wipe our feet dry after the bath, including the spaces between the toes - this is where the fungus starts.
  • We prevent cracks on the feet - we use moisturizing creams.
  • Wash my feet with antibacterial mild soap.
  • If there is a high risk of infection (for example, on vacation or in the pool), we use antifungal creams, powders or aerosols.
  • Dry your shoes thoroughly if they get wet.We do not wear wet shoes/boots.
  • We choose exclusively proven salons for pedicure/manicure procedures.
  • We prevent ingrown and deformed nails - we take measures in a timely manner.
